Ronda Rousey & Keeping off the bandwagon.

Before I heard the name Ronda Rousey, I had no real idea what UFC was or even the fact that it existed. I could not care less about the sport either. Its not something that I am interested in nor would I pay to go and see a contest. Regardless of who was fighting, Men or Women.

Its difficult to ignore the banter that goes on in Social media where people are entitled to voice their opinions but one thing that I rarely see is perspective. People read what someone has written or commented on and in 3 seconds they are persuaded without much thought at all.

Now the dust has settled a little on the Rousey vs Holm fight I will say that I watched the highlights. What I saw was too amazing athletes who have mastered their craft both perform in the ring and also market themselves fantastically well. Lots of folks are quick to discredit Ronda Rousey for being a “sore loser” and “deserves everything she gets because she has a big mouth” yet what they seem to forget is that the name “Ronda Rousey” has done more for the sport of UFC and for women in sport than most.

Ronda Rousey has created a brand. She has sold her brand to millions and used her voice to help the sport of UFC grow and reach the homes of millions worldwide. All the athletes she fights against are benefiting from the hard work she has put in to promoting a sport she is:

1. Good at

2. Enjoys.

Sure she lost a fight. Millions of athletes lose battles and contest every day of the year. After the contest she showed respect and humility for her opponent and kept her dignity in tact and will probably walk away from that battle smiling knowing that she helped create opportunities like this for Women in sport. These sportswomen are able to exhibit their amazing athleticism and to be rewarded well for doing so.

Perhaps if people took a little time to consider these things before posting hate and comments that not only reflect their ignorance but amplify it to the masses then we would have more love for each other. Its sport. Its business. There is always perspective to be taken from a situation. Hey we could even learn something from these “experts” if we gave them more than 3 seconds to pass judgement.

If only all sports could grow in awareness like this has! After all, nobody ever heard of Ronda Rousey-The Olympian right?

“My philosophy is: It’s none of my business what people say of me and think of me. I am what I am and I do what I do. I expect nothing and accept everything. And it makes life so much easier.”

-Anthony Hopkins

More than the contest

More than just a contest.
